The TerraVin Philosophy

As the name implies TerraVin (TERRA - Latin for EARTH, and VIN - French for WINE) is more about the relationship between this specific site, its micro-climate and the fusing of these with the individual approach of the viticulturist and winemaker.

Our approach is to be uncompromising with regard to quality. The vineyard is planted to the best plant density, in the most suitable clones, on the most suitable root-stocks, and then we apply the most suitable form of viticulture. This, added to what is a unique piece of land and winemaking the respects that sense of place all come together in TerraVin.

If there was one word to explain my approach to viticulture, it is "balance". There are no magic numbers or references to the “Grand Cru Growers of Pinot Noir” handbook. If a vine is kept in balance, like any plant or a person, it will achieve its full potential.

Our winemaking philosophy is even simpler. If we want our wines to reflect their unique origins then the less intervention by the winemaker the better. Before we take any course of action we consider whether we are guiding the wine along its own journey or are we trying to force it into a predetermined regional or national style. A large proportion of our winemaking is done in the vineyard and as such the winemaking is simply not getting in the way of the natural process of fermentation. Wherever possible we hope to preserve the individual personality of each wine by bottling wine with no fining and for our reds no filtering.

Please enjoy the fruits of our labour.
